Been dreaming about a golden era movie-style summer holiday? There's a place you should go. It has tall pine trees, neatly lined apple orchards, secret nooks for romance or naps, a pretty little dam... oh and best of all, vintage Airstream trailers - silver on the outside, and on the inside bursting with colourful design. It goes by the name of Old Mac Daddy Luxury Trailer Park and has captured childlike imaginations and nostalgic hearts from all around the world. (Nadia Krige)

Although it's located an easy hour's drive from Cape Town, just a few kilometers off the N2 into the Elgin Valley, once you start following the just-rough-enough gravel pathway to reception it feels like you're stepping into a different age entirely. A simpler one, where checkered picnic blankets and lazy afternoons reign supreme. (Nadia Krige)

Old Mac Daddy boasts 12 vintage Airstream trailers with themes varying from gold-plated King Midas, to the lucha-licious Dirkie Sanchez suite (complete with a wrestling ring for a bed!), the cutely kitsch For Better Or For Boerewors and even a classy monochrome Life Before Colour. Most have a large wooden deck, perfect for outdoor lounging and all boast eco-friendly bathrooms with biodegradable toiletries and a shower outlet that waters the plants. (Nadia Krige)

We were allocated a trailer named Digit and couldn't wait to see what magical and innovative design it held. (Nadia Krige)

The neutral tones, spruced up with bright green, neons and shiny black exuded an invigorating mixture of energy and tranquility. A quick look around made it clear that Nicole Logan, the Cape Town-based designer behind this trailer's décor, was out to have as much fun with numbers as possible in her design, drawing inspiration from childhood games and early mathematics lessons. Above a special shoe-rack, a six-step guide to tying one's laces, immediately transported me back to the days of dolls houses, jungle gyms and the occasional skinned knee. (Nadia Krige)
-
A herd of numbered sheep flock around the ceiling above the bed, providing even the most incurable insomniac the possibility of a good night's rest. And just above the sheep, an intricate network of neon orange zodiac signs vie for attention. (Nadia Krige)
-
Situated against a steep incline, all of the trailers have breathtaking views of the gorgeous Elgin Valley - green and lush in summer, dressed in warm colours during Autumn, and spritely fresh in Spring. If you want to take a budget break, head there during the week. Check out the
Old Mac Daddy website for rates and specials. (Nadia Krige)

Each of the trailers are marked by an old-fashioned US Mail System post box, adding a certain measure of authenticity to the theme. (Nadia Krige)

Even if you aren't spending the night in a trailer, do
head out to the Elgin Valley for a day outing, and be sure to visit Old Mac Daddy's picturesque Brinny Breezes restaurant. Enjoy one of their delicious pizzas and a glass of locally produced wine. This is also where trailer residents can enjoy breakfast, which is included, lunch, dinner and drinks. (Nadia Krige)

While most of the trailers are set against the hillside, King Midas overlooks the little lake. It doesn't have a wooden deck like its counterparts, but instead boasts a delightful private garden and comfy hammocks. (Nadia Krige)
-
Just a short walk away from the reception area, a lovely wooden deck by the little lake complete with plush-cushioned wicker furniture invites guests to while away some time. Catch and release fishing is welcome, as long as you bring your own equipment. (Nadia Krige)
-
Small touches here and there, like these typical camping lamps, add value to the experience, making it feel like a real summer camp set-up - fortunately without the teenage awkwardnes. (Nadia Krige)
-
Taking a late afternoon stroll in the gravel road running between the Apple orchards comes highly recommended. However, if you're up for something more strenuous, opt for the 3.5km trail situated behind the lodge. (Nadia Krige)

A rectangular pool forms the focus point of the communal area, just behind the restaurant, and while it does tend to get slightly crowded at times, a chance to drift around on these floating bean bags will get even the shyest being to hang around. (Nadia Krige)
-
Have kids? Good news! They're so welcome at Old Mac Daddy! The Big Apple Playroom is just for them with table tennis, blocks, books, chalkboards and all sorts of entertainment. Just outside the door, a wooden tractor-shaped jungle gym is an excellent place to get rid of all that extra energy. (Nadia Krige)

Book-lovers take note! Old Mac Daddy has a little library of its own, where you are welcome to grab a book to read during your time there. They also operate a book exchange, ask one of the staff to tell you more. (Nadia Krige)
