News24 Travel reader Brad Visagie contacted us to share his experience in response to the piece detailing alleged baggage tampering captured at on camera at Cape Town International Aiport.

Brad Visagie wrote "I read the article on News24 regarding bag tampering and I thought I would share my experience.

I flew on SAA from Johannesburg to East London and was told when I boarded the aircraft that the overhead lockers were full and thus had to hand over my hand luggage to ground crew (Swissport at the time) who would stow it with the crew luggage and I would receive it on the tarmac in East London.

Upon arrival in East London, I never received my bag on the tarmac as promised and had to wait at the turnstile. When I opened my bag, I noticed that it had been ransacked and a camera, two pairs of sunglasses, and an iPod had been stolen.

I took the matter up with Acsa and I reported it to the police. The airport manager at East London conducted a search on all staff and nothing was found. I made an appointment with the head of security at Acsa who invited me to review security footage at OR Tambo, which I did. The two cameras which were located at the apron in question were not helpful at all. The one was faulty and the other one was pointed directly at a blank wall (not sure if this was intentional).

The overall experience and lack of urgency from Acsa’s perspective was atrocious. They showed no sign of sympathy and weren’t helpful at all. I now wrap my bag in plastic whenever I check luggage and I never hand over my hand luggage, I will rather be offloaded from the flight.
