Photo of the day: Monumental selfies

2013-12-12 13:01
There's a little tradition on Instagram called Throwback Thursday, where users post pics of anything with an old fashioned, vintage or old-schooled tinge.

While it started out as a more fashion-oriented trend, it's spilled over into other spheres of interest as well, including travel of course, as well as the recently dictionary official, selfie.

Media reports across the globe are in debate of whether US president Barak Obama’s latest selfie, taken at Johannesburg’s Nelson Mandela memorial service, was a photo taken in poor taste. By the look of first lady, Michelle Obama’s face in a news report photo capturing the moment, the monumental selfie was an image that could have waited- under after the event.

While president Obama’s behaviour poses question as a result of him being an influential leader of the free world, the former respectively, can also be seen as a man, capturing his journey to a foreign land, in honour of an iconic man, Nelson Mandela.  In a similar way, travellers all over the world are capturing their momentous moments.

Today's photo of the day by Instagram user, Mark Ilansky, displays the ultimate momentous photo. Ilansky lies on cold snowy ground, eyeing a monumental statue in Russia.
