Photo of the day: Travel mascot

2013-11-04 15:52
It all started in 1986, when a stranger took pity on a solitary garden gnome in some suburban Sydney yard and send it off on an adventure of a lifetime.

According to Wikipedia, a short feature in the Sydney Morning Herald on September 24 of that year read:  'An Eastern suburbs gnome-owner was distressed when she discovered her gnome had been stolen at the weekend. A note was found in its place: "Dear mum, couldn't stand the solitude any longer. Gone off to see the world. Don't be worried, I'll be back soon. Love Bilbo xxx."'

This once-off prank soon caught imaginations across the globe and in no time became popularised by films such as the 2001 cult classic, Amelie. In 2004 it was featured in the viral marketing campaign Where is my Gnome? used by online travel agency Travelocity. Since then, the "Roaming Gnome" has become Travelocity's mascot.

Over time the idea of travel mascots has evolved and today's photo of the day by Instagram user tominpok shows a cute cartoon character figurine exploring one of the US' greatest natural phenomenon.
