'Six reasons why SA rocks!'

2014-05-06 10:00
News24 Travel reader David Groome responds to an article that placed South Africa as the 8th most miserable country in the world.

"1.    Despite the downsides and whatever adversity we always seem to be able have fun as South Africans. At a recent braai attended by some overseas guests as well they could not believe how we South Africans are always joking and laughing and how people constantly take the wee wee out of each other without anyone taking offense.

2.    When we walk past strangers we always seem to be able to greet each other and get a smile back - go to England and see how well that works!

3.    Despite our political diversities as individuals we actually all get on and can share a joke with each other even if just in the moment.

4.    Go away for a weekend to the bush whenever......all we ever look to do is have fun, a beer/wine and a laugh......

5.    In fact I think as a nation we laugh & smile far more than many other people I've observed in places I've visited.

6.    My wife and I saved for 10-yrs to go on a long awaited tour of the UK for a month - whilst we had (made our own) fun most people we came across just didn't smile or make jokes - 3 weeks into the trip we couldn't wait to get back to SA.........when we arrived back we were met at customs by one of our African brothers - he looked at my passport and obvious pale face and with a broad smile said a hearty "welcome home my friend" - I tell you I was so happy to see him I could have kissed him.......it was in that moment we realised that despite all our moans and groans about all that seems 'wrong' in our beautiful country - it and all the people in it are what makes it special!!

As jamie foxx says in one advert- "put that on your twitter - put that on your internet"....... what else can one say.....

Dave - Durban, South Africa"
