Street Culture: Jozi

2014-01-29 08:35
Johannesburg, known for its fast paced nature, is increasingly becoming a place where Igers (people who use Instagram, just in case you didn't know) are fond of taking beautiful pictures.

Sit back, scroll down as we take you through our later Street Culture round-up of five beautiful pictures.

Here's Johannesburg through the eyes of Instagram.

The City of Gold has come a really long way. From Thabo Mbeki’s policies that allowed for a refurbishing of the city, to other inner-city projects, Jozi is now a thriving cultural hub.

The 1991 capital flight to the northern suburbs has not stopped the Jozi CBD from flourishing. This part of town is a major public transportation hub as all rail, taxi and bus services run into the city centre.

Old Park Halt Museum

What was once Joburg’s first station, is now a museum. It was built in the Netherlands in 1895 and was then shipped to Jozi. It now stands in between the Nelson Mandela bridge and Newtown. The structure was erected there in 1995, with the intention of a museum, but this has not yet been done.

Nelson Mandela Bridge

In a bid to “modernise” the inner city, the Nelson Mandela bridge was built. It cost well over R102 million for it to be built, and the purpose of it is to link the two areas of business Braamfontein and Newtown. For a spectacular show, the bridge has been installed with LED lights that you can see in the evenings.

Carlton Centre

Also known as the “Top of Africa”, this 50 story building has been standing tall for over 50 years. From the top of the building you can see landmarks such as Soccer City, Gandhi Square and Gold Reef City Theme Park.
