We're being forced to fight unjustified undesirable person ruling

2014-07-08 15:34
Cape Town -  There is no doubt taking over a new ministerial portfolio cannot be easy and that newly appointed minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom has his work cut out for him.

Hanekom recently stated he'd like to transform SA's airports to make tourists feel welcome and saf- as a means to managing foreign perceptions of the country better.

We asked our readers what they thought needed to be improved at South Africa's airports - following is a response from one of our readers who has asked to remain anonymous...

"My wife and me are regular visitors to your beautiful country.

We have noticed every time we land in Johannesburg or Cape Town the unfriendly way the customs treat us. They do not look you in the eyes and the way they look is not pleasant, nearly aggressive, as if they want to say: what are you coming to do here ?

On our last visit we wanted to stay one month longer and two month before our new departure date.

We applied at the Home Affairs for this visa extension period.

When our departure date came near we did numerous calls and visits to Home Affairs with long queues and also unfriendly civil servants, but we did not receive an answer on our application.

The next thing what happened was that we were taken out of the queue at the airport by Home Affair officials and told that we were violating the rules as we had overstayed our visa period!

This after two months waiting for Home Affairs to answer our application! We were declared undesirable persons for a one year period!

As we are still in the process of fighting this unjustified measure, we would appreciate it if you do not mention our names as this might affect our appeal against this “overstay”.
