Johannesburg - Operations have returned to normal at OR Tambo International Airport, following an aborted takeoff of a chartered airplane on Tuesday, Airports Company SA (Acsa) has said.

A chartered Boeing MD-82 airplane aborted its takeoff after landing gear caught fire when its tyre came off its mount. Global Aviation Operations, which flies charter flights throughout Africa, blamed the fire on a "tyre separation".

Flights have been delayed due to the incident as the affected runway was closed to remove the plane and could not be reopened until the Civil Aviation Authority had completed a full inspection.

No one was injured in the incident. The aircraft was carrying 120 passengers and seven crew members, who had since safely disembarked from the plane and are being kept in a secure location, Acsa spokesperson Unathi Batyashe-Fillis said. The plane had been bound for Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi.

"Each departing flight has had about a five-minute delay," Batyashe-Fillis said.

"Delays have been happening from 7.00 this morning until now. One would assume that we are experiencing many delays but we are not."

Part of the reason was that it was not peak time, she said.
