Cape Town - Cape Town's central station will pilot Metrorail's free wi-fi service, as part of the rail operator's R233-million service improvement plan.

The Argus reports, commuters at Cape Town Station can expect free wi-fi access on its platforms towards the end of May.

Metrorail Western Cape manager Mthuthuzeli Swartz said the new addition is part of the rail operator's R233-million plan to improve its services, giving commuters something fun to do while they wait for their trains.

Not to be confused as a sugar coat for annoying train delays that often plague Western Cape train services, Metrorail will also target delays by improving safety and infrastructure decay through new trains and replacing old tracks.

The report states the rail operator will also be unveiling a mobile app, which will allow users to track where a train is and keep abreast of any other problems or incidents that might cause delays.

The use of the free wi-fi service on Cape Town Station will be subject to a limited amount of megabytes per commuter, with the option to purchase additional data if necessary.

No details of when the service would be available in other areas have been released.

Other free wi-fi hotspots available in the Cape Town central include the Company's Gardens with 100 megabytes of free data a day as well as in Harrington Square, part of the Cape Town Partnership's for free wi-fi in the city. Visitors to the Prestwich Memorial can enjoy unlimited wi-fi usage.
