Cape Town's most perfect place for a selfie?

Signal Hill gets framed as one of Table Mountain's iconic photo spots.

Cape Town - Capturing life’s most beautiful design - nature - this is the aim of the 2.8m tall by 4m wide yellow frame, positioned at the top of Signal Hill in the heart of Table Mountain National Park designed by Porky Hefer.

The frame, which is the second of seven proposed frames to be erected in Cape Town, and sponsored by Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, is meant to serve as reminder that Table Mountain is an official New7 wonders of Nature, as well as to allow locals and tourists to catch a glimpse of the mountain from a different perspective.

The city had its first frame erected at the V&A Waterfront on World Tourism day, in late September this year. And as the second frame site has just been christened on Signal Hill, the spot for the third frame has already been secured. The next venue proposed to be issued with a frame is Blouberg Beach, where beach-goers may be able to capture a scenic photo of themselves near mountain and sea.

Sabine Lehmann, managing director of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway said that the decision to erect the frames is also due to the fact that Cape Town will be host of the World Design Capital for 2014.

She said that the next frames will be placed in locations that are perhaps less iconic, but rather more visible to South Africans, listing locations such as the Cape Flats, Langa, and Rondebosch Common. While project managers, World Design Capital, may have had other ideas about sites for the frames, mentioning the City Centre, Robben Island, and Look Out Hill as their intended locations.

Lehmann said that as locals, Table Mountain can often feel like wallpaper that doesn’t get the due recognition that it should. Table Mountain is the only natural wonder in the middle of a city and the frames are a way of celebrating and reminding Capetonians of how lucky they are to have the amazing mountain as a backdrop.

The New 7 Wonders Foundation has launched the WonderLove initiative, an international promotion offering couples a chance to win one of seven all-inclusive trips to their favourite New 7 Wonder of Nature, departing from anywhere on the planet. The competition is open to all at N7W and the winners will be announced on 14 February 2014.
