The Cape Town Stadium and Green Point Park could well be the next tourism attraction after the city recently approved a proposal to consider the rezoning of the area to allow for commercial activity.
While Cosatu suggested that the stadium be used for low-cost housing, Tourism Update reports that other kinds of plans are being made to add value to the space.
In the pipeline for the stadium are restaurants, a coffee shop, sports bars, offices, retail and conference space, commercial parking and temporary hospitality facilities.
Meanwhile, the city is also moving ahead with its plans to turn the Green Point Athletics Stadium into a track and field hub. It will have 5 000 seats and a hi-tech steel roof, and will be finished by February 2013.
Cape Town Tourism CEO, Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, has welcomed the initiative: "Tourism in Cape Town is linked to a year-round events strategy, with a particular focus on establishing more winter events to drive off-season and domestic tourism. We welcome the addition of any significant facility that can be utilised to create more opportunities for such events, and one that is also able to cater for international events."
