Escape to the 'Winelands' in Gauteng

2012-10-25 08:44
Just 10 minutes from the centre of Pretoria and 40 minutes from Sandton, you'll find the Kievits Kroon Country Estate, recently awarded Best Luxury Country Hotel in Africa by the 2012 World Luxury Hotel Awards.

Set on 16ha of lush manicured lawns, the estate is an oasis of beautiful trees and landscaped gardens which, together with the Cape Dutch-style buildings, including a stately Manor House with a terrace overlooking the gardens, have earned it the title “The Winelands in Gauteng”.

The 142-roomed hotel has everything necessary for a weekend of pampering and rejuvenation away from the bustle of the city.

Away from the sounds of traffic and children (the estate does not allow children under 14-years of age), you are free to sleep in, enjoy a late buffet breakfast, sip cocktails on the pool deck, swim in the sparkling lap pool, picnic on the lawn, lunch on the terrace, or indulge in some well-deserved pampering in the Winelands Spa.

The award-winning spa is best known for its outstanding thermae facilities which include steam rooms, saunas, Swiss showers, plunge pools and Jacuzzis. These facilities are available free of charge to hotel guests before and after treatments. There is also a heated indoor swimming pool and 10 therapy rooms, eight of which were designed so that couples can enjoy their treatments together.

If you are a fan of wining and dining, the hotel’s gourmet restaurant Granita will impress. It is one of the top restaurants around the country which were recently recognised for their outstanding winelists at the 2012 Diners Club Winelist Award. Kievits Kroon was awarded its 4th consecutive Diamond Award, the highest accolade given.

The restaurant was also awarded three flutes for its Long Wine List in the inaugural Food24 Wine List of the Year Awards.  Three Flutes are given to wine lists which score 86% or higher.

In keeping with the Winelands theme, the hotel launched its own Grand Rouge and Sauvignon Blanc wines last year, which are included on the winelist.

Granita offers an à la carte menu and, on weekends, a six course gourmet menu with the option of wine pairing.  Head chef, Sammy Mashile, never ceases to surprise with his innovative food combinations and twists on traditional fare and his latest menus are testament to this, and to his commitment to using the freshest local ingredients available. There is even a herb and vegetable garden in the grounds of the estate.

Kingsley’s restaurant is popular for its sumptuous carvery dinners and delicious buffet breakfast menu, which includes everything from fresh fruit and cereals to omelettes and fresh pastries, and can be enjoyed on the sunny deck overlooking the pool and gardens.

The hotel offers a variety of room options to suit all budgets, including accommodation for guests in wheelchairs. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, flat screen televisions with selected DStv channels, tea and coffee making facilities, complimentary Wi-Fi, luxury cotton linen, and a bar fridge. There is a nightly turn-down service.

The hotel is well-known for its excellent service and warm, accommodating staff, and this is what sets it apart. As Marinique de Wet, director of the World Luxury Hotel Awards says, “You can design, create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.”

Kievits Kroon offers a number of affordable packages for couples looking for a romantic weekend break, including a Summer Getaway package at just R995 per person per night including dinner at Kingsley’s restaurant, luxurious accommodation and a sumptuous buffet breakfast.
