Gautrain 'more punctual than Tube'

2013-04-09 08:53

Johannesburg - The Gautrain is more punctual than its UK counterpart, the London tube.

This is what Bombela, the train's operating company, discovered during a study conducted between August 2011 and March 2012.

Beeld reports that spokesperson for Bombela, Kelebogile Machaka, announced that 98,6% of the Gautrain's departures and arrivals fall within the three minute schedule, which is above the contractual target of 90%.

According to a quarterly report by the UK rail network, 91,3% of British trains depart and arrive on time.

"Based on these statistics, the Gautrain's record of punctuality is better than the best train operators (London Overground and Heathrow Express) in the UK. Apart from this, the Gautrain is also on a three minute schedule, wheras the UK trains are on a five minute schedule," Machaka said.

The study revealed that October 2012 proved to be the weakest month, with 97,13% of trains arriving and departing on time. Mackaha explained that this was due to a lightning strike to the Marlboro station's signal system. In the meantime protection against lightning has been put into place.

Furthermore, the study also showed that use of the Gautrain has grown with about 60% per year.

Machaka added that Bombela has been working on solutions for problems like cable theft and parking shortage.
