Cape Town - Hey Capetonians, good news! A night out just got a little cheaper, with the launch of uberX in the Mother City.

Uber, an international smartphone app used to connect riders with a private driver, brought the high-end UberBLACK in Cape Town in October last year and on Thursday launched the more affordable uberX.

Anthony le Roux, General Manager for Uber Cape Town, says: “We are thrilled to launch uberX in Cape Town today. This new service means that you can now enjoy the seamlessness, efficiency and safety of Uber at an extremely affordable price. This service will revolutionise the way Capetonians go about their daily lives. Our vision is that uberX will be so affordable and efficient that the need for car ownership in the city will soon become a thing of the past.”

Two of Uber’s most loyal riders, internationally acclaimed musical group Goldfish, were the very first riders of uberX in Cape Town on Thursday morning.

They also kicked off the free long weekend, where new and existing users can enjoy FREE uberX rides from now until 23:00 on Monday 16 June.

The Uber app will still provide the cashless, transparent service Capetonians love.

Uber riders will still be able to see their driver’s photo, name, registration and rating the moment their request is made, and will have access to a live GPS-enabled map throughout their journey.

To request a ride, users must download the free application for Android, iPhone, Blackberry 7, or sign up at uber.com/app.

To take advantage of the free period, users need to enter the promocode UBERXCT when they sign up or log in.

Prices to expect when you request a ride:
