Nelson Mandela's presidential term came to an end in 1999. After his term ended, Mandela kept himself busy by joining or lending his support to various human rights organisations. One of his chief commitments was the fight against the spread of HIV/Aids. See the pictures. VIEW

To many, celebrating the Human Rights means taking time out and look back to the struggle this country has gone through, while some prefer to spice things up with fun and adventurous activities on this historical day.

Johannesburg

Retro Party (20 March 2013)

The Doors is having a Retro Party. You'll get to rock out to a live performance from The Uncovered plus some old school tracks.
Entrance is free to everyone wearing a band t-shirt (past or present), otherwise it'll be R10.00 for ladies and students until 22:00 and R20.00 thereafter and R30.00 for guys all night.

Parklife Music Festival (21 March 2013)

A new acoustic fest, Parklife Music Festival, is making its debut at Marks Park with international one-man folk band Xavier Rudd. Tickets can be booked at computicket for R320.00 and children under the age of 13 get in for free. 

The Crooked Carnival Part 3 (21 March 2013)

The Play Mother in Law (Umamezala) (20 March)

Written and directed by Erick Mthethwa, the play is based on a true story featuring Mr Tshawe OF Emzini weziNsizwa.
Tickets are now available @Computicket, Shoprite Checkers/Checkers Hypers and Mtn outlets for R50.00 per person.

Decorex Durban (21-24 March 2013)

This year Decorex Durban is themed 'Bliss' and the show promises to provide plenty of design and decor ideas and inspiration.

Mahatma Gandhi




You might also want to know about this human rights giant. Visit the Phoenix Settlement, established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1904  is situated on the north-western edge of Inanda, some 20 kilometres north of Durban. The settlement is where you can view his pictures, his work and learn more about this leader who fought against racial laws.

Blackstoneradio Cape Town Album Launch (20 March)

Celebrate Human Rights Day in Cape Town with Mother City groove rock band Blackstoneradio atZula Sound Bar on Wednesday, 20 March 2013. The ensemble are due to launch their debut album “Out of Rock” at the Long Street institution.

The Okavango Macbeth   (20 – 23 March)


Opening a 10-day run on 20 March, Alexander McCall Smith's first-rate African opera The Okavango Macbeth descends on the Mother City at the Artscape Theatre just in time to commemorate Human Rights Day.

Tickets are available from R150.00 at Computicket.com and the Artscape Box Office, the show starts at 8:15pm each night.

Roger Goode at Tiger Tiger Claremont (21 March) 

The Goode doctor is in the house this Human Rights Day in Claremont. 5FM DJ Roger Goode heads down to Tiger Tiger for a massive show-down sessions. Tickets cost R40.00 per person for members and R45.00 per person for non-members, kicks off at 8pm.


Hamilton vs Villager Annual Derby Day (21March, Green Point)

Join the festivities as South Africa's oldest rugby club, Hamiltons RFC, do battle against the second oldest club, Villagers RFC, in their annual derby in Green Point. Games start from 13h00.


Absa Cape Epic (17-24 March 2013, Knysna)
The spectacular new route of the Absa Cape Epic promises to be as exciting and challenging as previous years.





Beesloop Farm Race 15km and 5km (21 March- dates to be confirmed)

Woodstock Academy of Music Official Launch Party (21 March)

Celebrate the opening of this brand new musical hub and studio this Human Rights Day in Woodstock on Thursday, 21 March 2013.
