WATCH: Johannesburg - Then and Now

Cape Town - Remember that Cape Town then and now viral video we shared a few months ago? Well, there’s (obviously) now a Joburg then and now video.

Watch the video here.

The split screen footage compares modern day Johannesburg to golden oldie Jozi, and much like the Cape Town video, not much has changed in terms of the way the city looks.

BUT, we all know, that what Johannesburg was like in the 60s, is nothing like the way Jozi is now. In fact, if the 50s version of Jozi was human, she’d look at modern Jozi in complete awe and here’s why:

1.    Jozi has reinvented itself

To get a clear view of what we mean, head on over and read a piece published earlier this week on how Johannesburg, with new hot spots such as Maboneng and Newtown, is highlighting itself as a legit travel destination.

2.    Jozi has Africa’s first ever pocket guide

"Johannesburg in your pocket", a nifty pocket guide was launched earlier this year and is the first “in your pocket” guide to exist outside of the walls of Europe, making it a great achievement for this African city.

It’s not only the world that is beginning to catch the Jozi bug, because we saw this a mile away and took to Instagram to see exactly how Igers are taking to the streets of Jozi in all its splendour (Click here to see what we’re talking about).

3.    Jozi keeps up with the latest trends

So you know that chart topping track "Happy" by American producer Pharrell Williams? Well, it's managed to create quite a global phenomenon, with countries taking up the challenge to create their own video versions of the song, and guess what? Jozi has its own Happy video. (Cape Town has one too, but that's beside the point).

If, after reading all of this, and watching all those videos you are still not convinced that Johannesburg is a force to be reckoned with, stay tuned to more of News24 Travel content and we’ll prove exactly what we mean.
