Johannesburg - OR Tambo International Airport security guards confiscated two soft fabric snakes from a five-year-old-girl and her brother, aged six, The Star newspaper reported on Thursday.

"They said we're not allowed a replica of a snake. It's not a plastic thing. If it was one of those little rubber ones, I would understand. But these are like a teddy bear, the kids use them as pillows," the children's father, Cape Town resident SJ Botha, told the newspaper.

He said the guards had tried to confiscate the snakes at the security scanners last Thursday. The children's uncle, who was not accompanying them on their flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town, took the snakes home.

Airports Company SA spokesperson Unathi Batyashe-Fillis told The Star if anyone suspected security guards were acting illegally they should contact the company or police.
