PMB passanger number rise

Pietermaritzburg - The number of passengers flying through Pietermaritzburg's airport has almost doubled in the past three years, KwaZulu-Natal finance MEC Ina Cronje said on Thursday.

The airport showed its first surplus in 2012, she said in presenting her department's annual budget in Pietermaritzburg.

In 2010, there were 59 000 passengers who used the airport, formerly known as Oribi Airport, she said. This number increased to more than 103 000 passengers last year.

Revenue from the airport increased from under R1m to R2.4m in 2012. The airport had operated at a loss of R2.5m in 2009, but in 2012 it turned in a R600,000 profit.

The sole airline operating out of the airport is SA Airlink which, according to airline spokeperson Karin Murray, operates 25 flights a week to Johannesburg.

Murray said the airline was considering new destinations, with Cape Town was on the radar at some point in future. The airline was also planning to increase its capacity on the existing Johannesburg route.
