SA woman summits Everest

2013-05-20 09:35
Johannesburg - An events planner from Johannesburg became the third South African woman to summit Mount Everest at the weekend.

The Witness reports that Lee den Hond, 42, completed the climb as part of the Canadian Peak Freaks group. All 13 members of the group summited the highest mountain on Earth, located in the Himalayan mountain range, and described the weather as being "calm" with "warm sunshine" on their website.

The climb was described as "easy" and the climbers as "super, super strong".

Den Hond, who lives in Lonehill, said her climb was dedicated to children who head households in South Africa. She will donate all money raised to the Carte Blanche Making a Difference campaign, specifically the people of Schaumburg.

She joined the Canadian team because there was no South African group planning an Everest expedition in the near future.

The Canadian outfit summited for the 12th time.
