The most expensive Schengen visa...

Barcelona - If you’re a regular South African with an appetite for travel, you’re probably sick of the limitations posed by our good old green ‘biltong book.’

Well, we have a solution for you – why not invest in a property on the Portuguese or Spanish coastline? If you buy a home of  à500000 (R6.8-million) or more in cash in either country, residency rights as well as a Schengen visa will be yours.

Times Live reports that these property combo deals offered by the so-called Portugal Golden Visa, which came into effect last year, and the Spanish Residency programme, which came into effect last month, are becoming increasingly popular among South Africans.

South African estate agency Pam Golding Properties is now marketing leisure and investment properties in Spain and Portugal.

Fin24 reports that the two governments, which were especially hard hit by the 2008 credit crunch, are specifically targeting Chinese and Russians who have been flocking to Europe for their holidays for more than a decade.

The Schengen visa application process has become increasingly complicated for South Africans, as the European Union introduced the Visa Information System in June this year, which requires applicants to appear in person to enable the collection of biometric data.

So, if you have the cash, maybe hand-picking a gorgeous hacienda on the Spanish or Portuguese coastline will be less of a mission to process...

But if you don't have the cash, best check out our Schengen 101 article if you're planning on going to Europe anytime soon.
