V&A in bid for cruise terminal

2013-09-19 08:58

Cape Town - The owners of the V&A Waterfront are preparing a bid for a dedicated cruise liner terminal.

Tourism Update reports that David Green, CEO of the V&A Waterfront said that the development of a cruise terminal could increase the Waterfront's contribution to GDP by 51%. He added that there is great scope to improve the visitor experience and work with SA Tourism as well as cruise companies.

According to Green, it is a competitive bid and there is no guarantee the V&A will be successful. Tenders are to be submitted by mid-October, after which a five-month adjudication process will be carried out.

The Transnet National Ports Authority confirmed their plans to construct a dedicated cruise terminal late last year and interested operators were invited to submit their proposals for the management of the dock in July this year.

In the mean time berth E in Duncan dock has been adjusted slightly to accommodate cruise liners.

The development of a passenger dock forms part of the TNPA's estimated R3bn plan to improve Cape Town harbour next year.
