Cape Town - We're sure that by now you are well aware of the fact that Cape Town has been named 2014’s World Design Capital, a first for any African country. But even so, we feel it's good to be absolutely sure that you know exactly what this title means for Cape Town, and what is in store for the country during 2014.

What is World Design Capital?

The World Design Capital (WDC) is a city promotion project created by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design. The purpose of the WDC is to recognize and award accomplishments made by cities around the world in the field of design. The official slogan for this year’s drive is “Live Design, Transform Life”.

Cape Town received this title beating Bilbao (Spain) and Dublin (Ireland).

Aim of the WDC

The WDC seeks to address social issues with the use of well-thought out design. This is then hoped to further promote the vision of the World Design Capital project is to promote and encourage the use of design to further the social, economic and cultural development of the world’s cities.

Why this is good for South Africa

By looking at the ways in which the WDC has transformed past capitals Seoul (South Korea), and Torino (Italy), it is clear that the benefits of the WDC are long lasting. Torino, for example, used the momentum of the initiative to reposition itself as a city- this has in turn, helped the city build better relationships with national and international design institutions.

Not only that, but the projects that have been prepared for WDC Cape Town will impact many people’s lives and contribute to solving social and environmental issues.

This initiative also provides the opportunity for cities to showcase their accomplishments in attracting and promoting innovative design,

The Four themes

The slogan "Live Design. Transform Life" is held tightly by four core themes, and they are:

1. African Innovation. Global Conversation: African ideas that speak to the world.

2. Bridging The Divide:
Design that reconnects our city and reconciles our communities

3. Today For Tomorrow:
Sustainable solutions for people and planet.

4. Beautiful Spaces. Beautiful Things: Inspiring architecture, interiors, food, fashion, jewellery, craft, art and creativity.

The WDC has created a year-long programme that includes events, exhibitions and tours that are aimed to promote the initiative.

Each event, exhibition or anything related to the WDC has a specific code, e.g. #WDC421 and this has been designed to make sure that you are able to find the event you are looking for easily on the official WDC tour.
