World Design Capital: Events

The World Design Capital has brought along with it some events that are set to take place in and around Cape Town throughout the year. Take a look through a list of these events and plan accordingly.


Signature events:

•    Design Policy Conference:  22 – 23 October 2014
This conference puts practitioners and policymakers under one roof in order to review design practices and insights from around the world. This will then be used to inform the development of design policies.

•    Cities Exhibition: 21 – 28 November 2014
An international showcase of design that has social impact and exhibits the WDC Cape Town 2014 ethos of “Live Design. Transform Life”.

•    Convocation Ceremony: 28 November 2014
Similar to the WDC Signing Ceremony, the ‘WDC Convocation Ceremony’ is a symbolic event highlighting the official ‘hand-over’ of the WDC title from one city to the next.


(Cape Town Street Food Festival)

More events:
•    Maboneng Township Arts Experience (February/March and October/November;
Venue: Imizamo Yethu and Gugulethu

The concept here is simple yet beautiful: transform township homes into art galleries where members can view works crafted by local artists.

•    Cape Town Street Food Festival ( 21- 22 March 2014)
Venues: De Waal Park
For the food lovers: It is here that you will be exposed to an array of cuisuine and where you will get the chance to explore the streets of Cape Town while also having the option to have delicious on-the-go treats.

•    100% Design South Africa (25 – 28 April 2014)
Venue: TBC
Another first for South African Soil, this trade event (being the largest in the UK) provides the platform for established designers to showcase contemporary, commercially oriented creations in interior, hospitality, office and product design.

•    Red Bull Doodle Art Competition (October 2014)
Venue: Grand Parade
These finals will see young artists from over 50 markets create sketches for the winning title. They will be creating their Doodles in a temporary exhibition space built on the Grand parade.

•    Muizenberg Festival (October 2014)
Venue: Muizenberg
Be sure to experience live entertainment, craft stalls and performance art. The aim of this festival is to draw attention to the strong creative community that is found in the suburb of Muizenberg.

•    Art Walk (November/December 2014)
Venue: Around Cape Town
 This temporary open-studio event invites members of the public to visit the work spaces of some of the most well-known artists in the city. This will focus on the creative processes of architects, dancers and chefs.

•    Temple of Dance (October 2014)
Venue: TBC
This dance opera fuses film, music and performances to show how special and intricate movement is.

•    Cities Exhibition (21 – 29 November 2014)
Venue: TBC
Approximately 20 cities from Africa, Asia and Latin America will showcase how they have used design to transform aspects of their citizens’ lives
