World’s first Wikipedia town

2012-05-21 12:37
The Welsh town of Monmouth - the birthplace of Henry V - has a whole new claim to fame, as it became the world's first ‘Wikipedia Town.'

According to Wanderlust Magazine volunteers and businesses in Monmouth have been working to create an online encyclopedia about every aspect of the town's life and history by linking all its landmarks to online Wikipedia articles via scannable barcodes.

Starting on Saturday 19 May, visitors will now be able to scan barcodes using their smartphones and be linked immediately to a relevant article. The project has been helped by the local council's installation of free wifi throughout the town.

Articles will be available in more than 26 languages, making information available to visitors from all over the world.

Monmouth - now dubbed Monmouthpedia - was chosen as the pilot project on the basis of its rich history and cultural heritage. With the campaign already proving to be fruitful with regards to tourist numbers, other towns may follow suit soon. Keep your eyes peeled.
