A student housing developer claims the "true cost" of building a brand-new bed on campus in South Africa is R36 000 per year. "Most of the universities I spoke to couldn't give me this figure," says John Schooling, whose company builds student residences.
Maintenance, cleaning, electricity and water for a bedroom in residence costs about R16 000 per annum according to Schooling's own calculations. "If we have a brand-new bed that is built the cost to the institution, to the government, the university, to everyone else is in actual fact R36 000."
This is based on research Schooling alone conducted at eight universities in South Africa, although he says he struggled to obtain information on the actual cost from the institution itself. In this clip Schooling details the cost of building housing on campus and how varsities might reduce the cost (especially to the student).
