Mandela Day: Making a home for recovering drug addicts

18 July, 04:46 PM

“How many orphans did you cause when you were in the army?”

This was the question Gordon Dewar asked himself after he visited an orphanage in Zambia and that’s where the journey to building Legae la Nnete started.

Legae la Nnete (A real home) is currently a rehabilitation centre for recovering drug addicts, but his goal is to have a home for children. Watch.

Situated in Muldersdrift, west of Johannesburg, the non-profit organisation called on volunteers for Mandela Day to make the farm sustainable for the 24 young men living on it.

“We want to help anyone who needs a hand in life, especially kids in need,” he told News24 on Tuesday.

The organisation also up skills its residents by teaching them how to farm, paint and motor mechanics.

Most of the rooms on the farm were built by the residents. “It’s very hands on.”

Dewar’s goal is to have a training centre so they can give proper qualifications.
