WATCH: Zille intervenes after threats to burn down Gugulethu school

19 May, 01:56 PM

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille visited the Vukukhanya Primary School in Gugulethu on Friday to meet with protesting residents in an attempt to allay tensions in the area.

The protests came after plans for the construction of long-awaited community facilities were shelved, in favour of upgrading an informal settlement on the site of planned community hall, library and satellite police station.

City officials and members of the department of education were also present at the meeting.

Zille said she received a phone call last week informing her that the school was at risk of being burnt down.

"You know, we've got a very long waiting list for schools... and the problem is, if a school gets burnt down they aren't on the list for new schools and we can't replace the school."

"Burning down a facility for children is never a solution to any kind of problem," Zille said.
