WATCH: Thousands flee Myanmar following 'ethnic cleansing' campaign

08 September, 03:27 PM

Myanmar, shaken by religious and ethnic tension, has experienced more deaths following attacks by Rohingya insurgents on security forces near Myanmar's border with Bangladesh on August 25.

Since then, and the military counter-offensive, at least 1000 people have been killed. In the last two weeks alone 164 000 mostly Rohingya civilians have fled to Bangladesh.

Tensions in Maynamar date back to the 1940s when local mujahideen fought against government forces to have Mayu Peninsula in Northern Rakhine become part of Bangladesh.

Human Rights Watch's initial investigations of the current situation in Rakhine State are indicative of an 'ethnic cleansing' campaign.
