Iraq deaths fall significantly

Baghdad - Deaths from insurgent attacks in Iraq fell sharply in June, official data showed on Friday, after one of the bloodiest months since the US-led war toppled Saddam Hussein in early 2003.
In June, data provided by the Iraqi ministries of defence, health and the interior showed that 430 people had died in attacks and 933 were wounded, a drop of more than one-third from May's death toll of 672 dead.
The number of wounded was down by 20%.
Civilians were hit the hardest, accounting for 266 deaths and 699 wounded, while 123 policemen died and 166 were wounded.
The army reported 41 deaths and 68 wounded.
A total of 160 attacks were recorded, including 53 with car bombs, 27 with homemade bombs and 17 with mortars. Armed assaults against homes or businesses were responsible for the remaining 63 attacks.
On the insurgent side, 229 were reported killed while 1 521 were detained.
