Johannesburg - South Africans pledged nearly $100 000 to help Haiti's earthquake survivors during a telethon hosted by the state broadcaster on Thursday.

Anchors on SABC's Morning Live news and public affairs programme wore the yellow and green shirts of the national football team with the slogan "help rebuild Haiti".

Celebrities in the same shirts answered phones behind the anchors during the two-hour morning programme, taking pledges from around the country.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the broadcaster was still tallying pledges made by cellphone text messages and by bank transfer to a special account set up for donations.

Challenges

Among the donors were members of a golf club in south-eastern South Africa who raised R15 900 (more than $2 000) with an auction the night before the telethon, then challenged other clubs across the country to match their gift.

Officials from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and a vineyard owner from the Cape Town area also made pledges and challenged others to donate during the telethon.

Susan van der Merwe, deputy minister of the department of international relations and co-operation, took calls at SABC headquarters. She says her department will work with SABC to ensure the donations reach the needy in Haiti.

"The catastrophe in Haiti is beyond our imagination," Van der Merwe said.

The South African government has already donated R1m (more than $130 000) to the Haitian relief effort. Van der Merwe said plans were under way for another million-rand government donation.
