Cape Town - As countries and individuals around the world scramble to donate money to the victims of the Haiti earthquake, many South Africans remain unsure of how they can help.

Meanwhile, local charities and the local arms of a number of international aid organisations have appealed to South Africans to make donations to help those affected by Tuesday's massive earthquake.

A few South African rescue teams have already left for Haiti to assist in the relief effort.

Here are some of the local organisations that are involved in relief efforts, and their contract details for donations:

Gift of the Givers is sending three teams to Haiti, and has appealed for donations.

MSF (Doctors without Borders) is also appealing for local donations to assist its teams already in Haiti.

The South African Red Cross has launched a R30m emergency appeal for donations.

The Lions Clubs International Foundation is also appealing for aid.

The Salvation Army's Southern Africa Territory has asked for local donations or international donations.

The South African government says its assistance to Haiti will be approached in three phases – the search and rescue phase (in partnership with the Department of Health, Vodacom, Netcare and Discovery, through Rescue South Africa); sending forensic pathologists to help identify bodies; and lastly, humanitarian aid, in partnership with NGOs such as the Gift of the Givers.
