Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma conveyed his condolences to Haiti's government and people following Tuesday's earthquake that killed hundreds in the Caribbean country.

"The government and the people of the Republic of South Africa wish to convey to His Excellency [President] Rene Garcia Préval… the government and the people of… Haiti our deepest sympathy and condolences following the disastrous earthquake," a statement issued by his office on Wednesday read.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the earthquake, either emotionally and psychologically or through the loss… of loved ones or destroyed infrastructure."

No South Africans have as yet been reported killed or injured.

The department of international relations and co-operation called on those who had family members or relatives in Haiti to contact the department's consular division on 012 351 100.
