10 held over drug smuggling
Wellington - An official says 10 Malaysians posing as an organised tour group were caught entering New Zealand with up to one kilogram of methamphetamine in each of their shoes.
Customs official Mark Day says it's the largest number of drug couriers caught in a single incident at New Zealand's border.
Day says customs officers at Auckland Airport searched two members of the group on Tuesday and found methamphetamine, also known as ice, in their shoes. He says the remainder of the group were searched and were also found to be carrying drugs.
The drugs they were allegedly carrying were worth about $8m.
The 10 are due to appear in court on Wednesday on illegal drug importing charges. They face up to life in prison if convicted.
