113 arrested trying to head for Australia

2012-05-28 14:03
Colombo - Sri Lankan police say they have arrested 113 people who were attempting to migrate illegally to Australia.

Police spokesperson Ajith Rohana says the Sri Lankan nationals were arrested early on Monday as they were preparing to leave the country in a fishing trawler.

They were arrested in groups in the capital Colombo and the coastal town of Negombo, about 30km from the capital.

The 113 face charges of trying to leave the country illegally.

Police also arrested six agents who they believed were behind a human-smuggling ring.

Hundreds of Sri Lankans try each year to leave illegally by boats for Australia, New Zealand and Italy looking for jobs.
