12 die as boat sinks in Brazil

2008-05-04 21:01

Sao Paulo - A boat with 110 people aboard sank in the Brazilian Amazon on Sunday, killing at least 12 people and leaving dozens missing, authorities said.

The Comandante Sales capsized before sinking swiftly on the Solimoes River, one of the largest branches of the Amazon, Fire Lieutenant Colonel Raimundo Rodrigues da Silva said. The vessel was carrying passengers who were returning from a party near the jungle city of Manaus, he said.

It was not clear what kind of boat the Comandante Sales was or how many passengers it was equipped to carry.

The bodies of 10 women and two men were recovered and several dozen people were unaccounted for, Silva said. The victims had not been identified and it is unlikely the boat kept a passenger list, he said.

It is possible the vessel was overloaded, but the cause of the sinking was still being investigated, Silva said. He added that passengers may have been trapped inside the boat because many were sleeping when it went down.

Local news media reported that some passengers survived by swimming to shore, but Silva said authorities did not have a survivor count.

The Brazilian navy joined about 45 rescue workers, including 15 divers, in the search for victims and survivors.

The boat sank just months after a two-story wooden ferry carrying more than 100 people collided with a barge loaded with fuel tanks on the Amazon River, killing 16 people.

Dragan says... Anthony I do believe Gadaffi was a dictator. I dont believe Libya is better off though and to prove my point I want you to answer 1 question. After the Libyan uprising do Libyans still own/control their own oil? If not who does? You see Libya does not produce much, it relies on oil as an export. before the regime controlled the oil wells but now foreigners control the oil wells. what is better? Some in the west might think, fantastic, we now own the oil.. but is this true even for the west? Oil prices sky rocketing in SA and the US and the res of the world.. not even the westerners are benefiting. its only the very very few the elite and the oil company share holders who can now inflate oil prices due to their ever growing monopoly. What is the point of having "democratic" elections when a country has been stripped of its primary asset by foreigners.. Libyans would be better off voting for democrats/Republicans http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/libya/9265441/Libya-still-ruled-by-the-gun.html Read the article...
