Soma - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday 120 workers were believed to remain trapped in a mine after a deadly explosion that claimed the lives of at least 238 people.

"We are not a hundred percent sure but an estimated number of 120 workers are believed to be trapped according to figures provided by the [coal mining]) company," Erdogan told reporters.

The explosion was believed to have been triggered by a faulty electrical transformer at around 12:30 GMT on Tuesday.

Hundreds of people gathered around the explosion site as rescuers brought out injured workers, who were coughing and struggling to breathe due to the dust.
