Paris - Sixteen people were seriously injured when fire swept through a seven-storey apartment building in Paris on Sunday, the French capital's fire service said.

Five people were reported to be in a very serious condition after being rescued from the blaze, which broke out just after lunch in the city's 20th district.

A fire service spokesperson said: "At least one person jumped from a window, five people are considered to be very seriously injured and 11 others are in a serious condition."

About 20 other residents had to be evacuated from the building.

The fire started in a basement store-room and spread quickly up the stairs to the top floor.

A total of 234 firefighters battled for two hours to bring the blaze under control and were still struggling to put it out late on Sunday.
