2 000 ill from tainted water
Budapest - The number of people taken ill after drinking contaminated water in a Hungarian town has risen to over 2 000, the head of the local hygiene office told MTI news agency on Tuesday.
People in Miskolc, north-east Hungary, began to fall ill over the weekend, complaining of stomach pains, nausea and diarrhoea.
Judit Bodnar told MTI that 2 145 people have now been affected by what local authorities identified as bacteria in the drinking water.
According to the head of the city's waterworks, heavy rainfall contaminated the drinking water supply of around a quarter of the town's 185 000 residents.
Residents have been supplied with bottled water until the problem has been resolved. - Sapa-dpa
