2 Lebanese get death for spying

2010-08-17 21:19

Beirut - A Lebanese judicial official says a military court has convicted two men of spying for Israel during the 2006 war and sentenced them to death.

The official said Antoine Atmi recruited Osama Berri and they both gave information to Israel during the war, which resulted in the deaths of fellow citizens.

The 2006 war between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah group killed 1 200 Lebanese and 160 Israelis. Lebanon and Israel technically remain at war.

Berri was present in the courtroom on Tuesday, while Atmi was sentenced in absentia, the official said on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Berri and Atmi can appeal.

The new sentences bring the number of people sentenced to death for spying for Israel to five.
