227 dead in Thailand from New Year road accidents

Bangkok - At least 227 people died from road accidents in Thailand over the new year holiday period, officials said on Saturday.

According to Department of Highway officials, half of the fatalities stemmed from alcohol-related accidents.

Officials also stated that 2 163 people were injured from road accidents during the period.

According to a study by the Transportation Research Institute, Thai roadways were the second most dangerous in the world with more than 44 deaths per 100 000 people, nearly double the world average.
