24 bodies pulled from factory

Palash Bari - Rescuers have recovered 24 bodies from the rubble of a nine-storey factory that collapsed in Bangladesh and trapped up to 200 people, officials said on Tuesday.

The garment factory, packed with people working the night-shift, caved in early on Monday after a boiler exploded.

Firefighters, the police and the army found four bodies overnight, said a spokesperson for the Rapid Action Battalion security force.

Around 100 people have been rescued but officials warned that the chances of finding more survivors alive were dwindling.

"At least three more days will be needed to remove the debris. The likelihood of survival for the trapped people is getting less all the time," said Salim Newaz Khan, director general of the Dhaka fire brigade.

Cranes would be used on Tuesday to remove some of the rubble, he said.

Most of those rescued from the building were injured, officials said.

Planning experts said the building at Palash Bari, 30km northwest of the capital Dhaka, appeared to have been built using poor quality concrete and on filled-in marshland.

Spyker says... Jerzy.., Evidently you are not happy with SA either. You cannot cope (hint, hint) with your fellow SAcans, you have no tangible substance to present to a debate, so you simply wish people away. You, my feckless foe, are NO different to the fast fading Juliarse Failema, himself. So, here is a suggestion: why don't you move to Zimbabwe, Sudan, DRC, Madagascar, in fact anywhere else in Africa (excl Botswana - it has adopted European norms, so it is thousands of years ahead already and evidently you are not interested in living anywhere other than in the stone age). Send us a postcard from Zim.., oops, no wait, they have not invented the wheel yet. Mmmm - yes.., send a drum-bongo-code message with the Tokoloshe (you may find him parading below - if you can fix your illegal electricity connection, that is). I am tempted to ask you when last you have been in Europe, but you will simply tell a lie, so let me help you - Europe at its absolute worse, is still tens of thousands of years ahead, of what Africa can ever dream to be. SO DREAM ON... Read the article...
