35 dead in India ferry accident

Gauhati - Police say a packed ferry boat has capsized in heavy winds and rain in remote northeastern India, leaving at least 35 people dead and up to 75 others missing.

Assam state police chief JN Choudhury says the boat was carrying about 200 passengers, but details were sketchy because bad weather and the remoteness of the area hampered communication.

He says the accident occurred late on Monday on the Brahmaputra River near Fakiragram in west Dhubri district.

The area is about 350km west of the state capital, Gauhati.

Choudhury says strong winds and rain likely caused the accident.

Police and paramilitary soldiers have been sent to help with rescue efforts.
