Veracruz - A trailer broke loose from a cargo truck and slammed into a passenger bus on Friday, killing at least 43 people in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, state government spokesperson Gina Dominguez said.

Veracruz Governor Javier Duarte said 27 people were injured in the crash, including seven children.

The victims were workers travelling from Coatzacoalcos in Veracruz to the northern border state of Coahuila, Dominguez said. The accident occurred on a winding stretch of highway near the town of Alamo in the northern part of the state.

The driver of the trailer truck hauling sorghum fled the scene and was being sought by authorities, she said.

Duarte and his wife visited the accident site to oversee the rescue and recovery efforts, promising state support for victims and their families.

Thousands of people from Veracruz, Mexico's third most populous state, work in factories and farms along Mexico's border with the United States.
