Kathmandu - At least seven people died and hundreds were ill from infections with symptoms of jaundice in Nepal's south-eastern district of Biratnagar, officials said on Saturday.

The deaths occurred over seven days since the outbreak was first reported, the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division said.

Health experts said the outbreak had been caused by contaminated water, the Kathmandu Post reported.

Doctors said the death toll was likely to rise because the epidemic that began three weeks ago was still out of control.
