Action urged against US Gaza protesters
Austin - Texas Governor Rick Perry is urging the US attorney general to take action against US citizens who take part in a pro-Palestinian protest flotilla set to sail to the Gaza Strip.
The governor is a frequent visitor to Israel and is considering a run for president in 2012.
Perry wrote on Wednesday that he was concerned about two US-flagged ships that plan to challenge the Israeli naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. He urged US Attorney General Eric Holder to take legal steps to stop Americans from taking part, or to prosecute them if they do.
Perry cites federal law that prohibits US citizens from taking maritime action against a friendly country.
Last year, demonstrators attempted to sail to Gaza, but were stopped by Israeli forces; nine activists died in the melee.
