Kabul (dpa) - The split within Afghanistan's Taliban over its new leadership has been resolved, the group said, after the family of former leader, late Mullah Omar, pledged allegiance to the new chief.

News broke in July that Taliban founder and supreme leader Omar had been dead for two years, precipitating the group to announce a new leader in Mullah Mansoor, dividing the group's members and leaders.

The main opposition to Mansoor was from Omar's son and brother, Mullah Yaqub and Mullah Abdul Manan, who announced their allegiance to Mansoor Tuesday according to Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid.

Mansoor had promised Omar's family protection and vowed to consult Yaqub and Manan over important decisions, Mujahid said.

The new supreme leader is reaching out to commanders who opposed or doubted his appointment. Many senior Taliban figures, including in the political office in Qatar, have yet to publicly endorse him.
