Tirana - Albanian police have seized 2.3 tons of cannabis aimed at consumers in Italy and Greece, arresting 13 people involved in the trafficking, they said in a statement on Monday.

The drugs were seized in several operations between Thursday and Sunday in different Albanian towns during its transport towards the two neighbouring countries, police said in a statement.

Despite the efforts of the police, which claims to destroy between 90 000 and 130 000 cannabis plants every year, the Balkan country is considered a major transit zone for drugs and the leading supplier of cannabis in Europe.

In 2012, Albanian police seized more than two tons of cannabis en route to European markets, mostly Italy and Greece.
