Amnesty seeks more help for displaced Roma

2011-11-29 23:04

Milan - Amnesty International is calling on the new Italian government to come up with better policies to help Roma who were forced out of authorised camps under a 2008 decree.

Amnesty International says the government should recognise a recent decision by the nation's highest administrative court that renders the earlier decree unlawful.

It did not demand specific solutions in its Tuesday appeal, saying that it should be up to authorities.

Amnesty also wants Milan to suspend the planned closure of two camps by the end of the year, following the closure of two others last May to make room to build a world's fair in 2015.

The rights group says Italy's forced expulsions of Roma, also known as Gypsies, do not follow human rights standards.
