Anti-Islam film protests spread to Sydney

2012-09-15 08:15

Sydney - Hundreds of protesters clashed with police in Sydney on Saturday, as a wave of unrest against a film that mocks Islam spread to Australia, with bottles and shoes hurled outside the US consulate.

Furious protests targeting symbols of US influence flared in cities across the Muslim world on Friday in retaliation for a crude film made in the United States by a right-wing Christian group that ridicules the Prophet Muhammed.

At least six protesters died in Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon and Sudan as police there battled to defend American missions from mobs of stone-throwers, and Washington deployed US Marines to protect its embassies in Libya and Yemen.

In Sydney, Saturday shoppers looked on in surprise as protesters, including children, shouted "Down, down USA" and waved banners such as "Behead all those who insult the prophet".

"We are sick and tired of everyone mocking our beloved prophet," protester Houda Dib told AFP, as the crowd of about 500 gathered outside the US consulate.

"They have no right to mock our prophet. We don't go around mocking anyone's religion."

"They call us the terrorists," protester Sarah Jacob said. "But everyone is terrorising our people."

Demonstrators were pushed back from the steps outside the consulate by police, provoking anger among some in the crowd, many of whom had brought their children with them.

"They were aggravating the situation by pushing our brothers," Dib said. "This is supposed to be a peaceful protest."

The protesters later moved to nearby Hyde Park, where one speaker called for calm, saying the aim of their protest had been to send a message.

"We are here for the sake of our god," he said. "The message is clear, you cannot mock [the prophet]."

Did religion start WW1? WW2? How about the genocide of native Americans? Is religion causing millions to die of hunger?

      LanfearM - 2012-09-16 08:19

@ tom.guy - yes religion is indeed causing millions to starve! Because people just breed and have loads of children because they are banned from using contraceptives by both the RCC and Islam. Perhaps the religious people should ask god/allah why he allows his followers to starve by causing a drought in Somalia? And then the "evil West" are the ones to feed them. Religion was a large part of the motivation behind the genocide of the Native Americans as well as the extermination of the Mayans and Incas by the very christian Conquestidors. Religion was the main motivation for Islam's trail of blood when they forcibly by war converted the middle-east to Islam. Even the Judaists were known in ancient times as the most violent of the Semitic tribes. Although Hinduism caused untold suffering of their own people through the ridiculous caste system, at least they never forcibly converted people. The Buddhist immolate themselves in protest instead of killing or hurting anybody else. The new Pagans are peace-loving "hippies". The non-believers are secular humanists who cares about humanity and the earth. It must be something about the desert that bakes a man's brains, because the three Abrahamic religions are beyond evil without a shred of humanity.

its funny how this south African Indian moslem @ziyaad is replying to everyone; the truth is that he/she cannot even survive 3months in a truely moslem country that follows the teaching of Muhammad to the letter. he/she ll run back to south Africa where it is liberal

      fatima.shaikjee - 2012-09-15 09:58

U so stupid, there's countless of muslims in south africa following the sunnah and coz u don't know it u speak crap.... And u don't see them bombing things coz that's not what islam teaches.... They following it peacefully and correct.... So wake up

      Frank Hublot Einstein - 2012-09-15 10:30

u r in south Africa where u r free to do what you like and you are supporting stupidity in other these Moslem countries. dont blame u, u r not one of the women who are 'honor killed' on a daily basis by their relatives. 'beware of stupid people in large numbers'

      Frank Hublot Einstein - 2012-09-15 10:33

the difference here is that those south African moslems that practice whatever you call it are doing it out of their own free will. the state is not dictating to them that they must do it. its just like a catholic nun covering herself. she can cease being a nun anytime and nobody will kill her.

      LanfearM - 2012-09-15 12:38

@ziyaad.zizoo - why can't you answer the questions that Frank posed? Why don't you move to a truly Islamic country such as Saudi Arabia? Speaking of Dubai, that is probably the most secular Islam country in the world, and they invite the foreigners for their expertise and entice them with loads of money to work there. I have family who lived in Dubai for several years. But in the end they always leave again... Nobody cares that "Muslims are here to stay" and most people don't want to fight with you about what you believe. It is what so many Muslims do in the name of their religion. But you will probably just rant and swear at me instead of answering burning issues such as women's rights in countries such as Iran and Saudia Arabia where men can marry 10 year old children, or the honor killings, the dress codes [even for foreigners! we allow you to dress the way you want over here], the death sentences for people who proclaim that they converted to another religion, and so forth. Why don't you rather answer the questions about these atrocities instead of just swearing and raving at everyone? I am sure your god is very proud of you! [not]

      Mbavhalelo - 2012-09-16 03:19

  • fatima.shaikjee - 2012-09-15 09:54

Ofcourse south african muslims are going to comment, and why must u say \indian\ stop this racism crap.... If it was jesus that was made fun off all christians around the world would protest regardless of country coz it will upset you.... And once again the stereotype of islam begins... Islam is not backward, so many things that were mentioned in the quraan are now being found by scientist in this day and age as being good for the body etc.... So stop labelling...and as a South African who lived through apartheid you should no better than labelling, ignorance makes u say things that others are laughing at coz u don't know even a quarter about islam...all I can say is GOOD LUCK TO YOU IN THIS WORLD AND THE NEXT!!!!!!

      Shaun O'Meara - 2012-09-15 10:15

Is it then not true that your prophet married a child of five years old and consecrated his marriage when she was only nine? in all countries that is called paedophilia! he was forty eight at the time of the marriage.

      michael.barns.1 - 2012-09-15 10:44

actually fatima you are wrong there... christians are more civilised and level headed, jesus was made fun of in a cartoon called south park, infact hes made fun of all the time on the show! So now did the christians go around killing people and destroying property and acting like a bunch of uneducated idiots? NO THEY DIDNT... so wake up

      LanfearM - 2012-09-15 12:41

@ fatima.shaikjee - no the christians will protest through legal means such as getting the film banned, and that will be that! They will not go and kill people, bomb buildings and innocents, and stage violent protests filled with threats of death! Big difference. I don't argue the christians used to be that way, and some still wish it was that way still, but most christians are moderate. For your information fatima, I am not a christian. Why do you Muslims always answer a question with an accussation of "similar behaviour" or another question. For instance, when the marriage of children to adult men are discussed, you guys immediately jump around and say "but the RCC priests are pedophiles!". Does that make what your immams and men do right? Two wrongs don't make a right.

      LanfearM - 2012-09-15 13:04

Yup, thought so. Just thumbs down instead of answering the questions posed.

Its way past time that Muslims learned they don't have the right to involve others in their vicious fairytale world. Your religion needs to be challenged at every opportunity. It is archaic and untrue, and its time followers were released from its steel grip of control which makes you behave like robots. It would be wonderful to see you free yourselves from this tyranny of a religion.

Throughout history, many Non-Muslims great thinkers and intellectuals stood fascinated by the personality of Prophet Mohammad PBUH and his biography they highly lauded his stances and principles: Hercules, the Great Roman Emperor, asked many questions about Prophet Mohammad PBUH to Abu Sufian and reached the conclusion of the truth of Mohammad's Call. He even said: ''if i were in his presence, I would wash his feet''. And the beard Of King Al Najashi of Habasha (Ethiopia) became wet with his tears when he heard some of what Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) came with, Al Najashi said: ''these words and what Jesus said, come from the same lantern''. And the French Philosopher, Lamartine said: "Mohammad (PBUH) is the Philosopher, Orator, Apostle, Legislator, Warrior, Conqueror of fantasies. No muslim author, movie maker etc,has evr insulted Christianity,The Bible,or Jesus. No Christian country is being invaded or illegally occupied by muslims. On what grounds r muslims being labelled as the aggressors?

      LanfearM - 2012-09-15 13:00

No, you don't insult them, you just kill them. Invaded and occupied illegally? Afghanistan perhaps? Or Iraq? The US-coalition troops are being pulled out of Iraq as we speak, and more people are being killed by suicide-bombers there than were ever killed by the coalition. Afghanistan is a mess, and I think the US-coalition should just pull out and let them rot under the Taliban! Excuse me, since when do you kill someone if you feel insulted? And then don't even kill the guy who insulted you, but just a random person(s) not even from the same country! The guy who made the video is a Coptic Egyptian and perhaps he was sick and tired of being persecuted in his own country! I guess it is also the fault of the christians or the "evil West" when churches full of people are blown up in Nigeria, and so forth. Western countries and culture have taken in millions of Muslims and accommodated them. They allow them to build mosques and worship as they wish. I don't see the same courtesy extended to christians and other religions in Islamic countries. Respect is earned. The actions of extremist Muslims have tarnished the image of Islam forever. Just like the actions of the old colonialists have tarnished the image of Europeans forever. And the actions of the communist Chinese have tarnished their government's image, and so forth. People are judged by their actions and if Muslims don't speak out against such violence and hate, then it is assumed that they condone it.

      LanfearM - 2012-09-15 13:07

@ DelusionBuster - lol, most of them seem to believe that it was all a conspiracy [if I take the comments on Islamic articles into account]. The US and/or Israel did it so that the world will turn against Muslims! Yah right Muslims, "the truth may be out there but the lies are in your head".

      fort.horseman.7 - 2012-09-15 13:24

@lanfear.trust me not 1 single muslim is interested in forcing any1 to convert to Islam. In Islam it is a sin to jugde any1.Jews and Christians r regardf as ppl of the Book.Allah says in the Quran 'tell them ,your God and our God is One'Iraq and Afghanistan was fine until the west invaded and started the chaos there. The west destroyd Iraq under the decietful claim that Iraq had WMD,s,unproven till today. The fires burning in those countries was instigatd by the west.Pls get ur facts straight!

      LanfearM - 2012-09-15 13:36

@ fort.horseman.7 - please get YOUR facts straight. You know very well why the Western world started attacking Islam. 9/11 ring any bells or are you also one of the deluded that believe it was a "conspiracy"? By no means was I in favour for either the war in Iraq or in Afghanistan, and I am still not. I think the US-coalition was foolish to do so. The "fires burning in Iraq" instigated by the US? Really? So I guess it is the US that instigates suicide-bombers to blow up their own people. Because that is what they do, whether you want to admit it or not. I see you don't answer any of the other questions I asked about women's rights, or Islamists blowing up churches, and so forth. The Coptic Christians in Egypt have been persecuted for a long time now. Read up on it. As to forcibly converting people, how can you deny it? In any country where Islam is the majority religion, their religious laws are imposed on everyone. Also, a Muslim that converts to another religion is sentenced to death in those countries [Saudi, Iran, etc.] I am not a christian btw, nor a Judaist. I am a non-believer, an atheist, and don't believe in any gods. Do you think that the only people in the world are Christian, Jew and Islam? Wake up, there are billions of people that are not one of the three and they have a right to worship as they please!

      fort.horseman.7 - 2012-09-15 13:43

The never ending 9/11 story is being xploitd to justify 1000's of 9/11's dat was perpetrated on Islamic Countries since then, with 1000 times more people killed to avenge the deaths of an estimated 3500 people in the Towers. And note, the towers were brought down by implosive devises, and not by the planes.

      LanfearM - 2012-09-16 08:26

Yup, the Muslims number about 1 billion. So do the Hindus. And the Christians number close to 2 billion. And there's another 3 billion people who are thousands of different beliefs, religions and non-beliefs. So what? Is that your point? That Islam now numbers just over a billion followers? Once again, so what? And as I said, stop lying! You know very well that it is on the agenda of many Islamic leaders to convert everyone to Islam by force. Perhaps YOU don't feel that way, but many millions obviously do.

      LanfearM - 2012-09-16 09:28

@ said.s.abdi.5 - you said: "but obvously we would stand strong and wouldn't take any BS from no 1." And that is exactly what the "evil West" and certain countries in Asia are doing, standing strong and not taking shyte from anyone who threatens them. 9/11 was not the only incident though it is the most famous. What about other embassy bombings through the years? Suicide bombers killing thousands of their own innocent civilians? Churches in Nigeria being bombed by Islamists? The persecution of Coptic Christians in Egypt? The oppression of christians in Saudi Arabia and Iran, where it is not even legal to build a church? The vile oppression and abuse of women? Will all this also stop if the "evil West" pulls out of Afghanistan? Did you know that most women in Afghanistan applauded the US-coalition's overthrow of the Taliban? With good reason too. The qur'an may not be burned, but immams in Iran burned thousands of bibles. The Taliban destroyed priceless history when they blew up ancient Buddhist statues, even though organisations offered to move the statues out of Afghanistan, they refused and opted to rather destroy it. Islam is the religion of destruction and death, not of peace. That is how it looks to the rest of the world when your fellow-believers' actions are seen. Why will none of you answer to this?!

  • fort.horseman.7 - 2012-09-15 13:04

Glorified and Exalted is Allah, above all that evil they associate with Him!

      Tony Lapson - 2012-09-15 14:24

There's nothing wrong with Allah, it's his pathetic followers that destroy all that is good.

respect for other people's religion has been an issue for a long time...

  • pdevillet.patrik - 2012-09-15 20:03

religion is the curse of humanity and the sooner it is remove the better for the surviving of this planet.I think it was Einstein who said"human stupidity and the universe are infinite but I am not sure about the former"

I am sick and tired of all the excuses made by the Muslim commentators on here. Nothing is their fault, everything is the fault of the "evil West" who dares to "provoke" them. When we ask questions about human rights, women's rights and the killing of the so-called "infidels" they quickly side-step the questions and just hammer on about the "occupiers" in Afghanistan. Iraq occupation is becoming obsolete as the troops there are daily being evacuated. So nothing is your fault is it? You are these wonderful, peaceful, good people who are misunderstood and unfairly demonised by the "evil West" media? You think it is right to stone a woman to death for being raped, you think it is right to marry a 10-year old child, you think it is right to sentence to death someone who converted to another religion, you think it is right to kill innocent people because you were insulted. Does that sound like the actions of people who believe in peace? If you are so very peaceful, why don't you try peaceful resolutions with other countries instead of blowing their buildings up with bombs and killing their ambassadors and innocent citizens? If the Jews and the Christians are "people of the book" and are respected by Islam, why then the constant hatred of especially the Jews? Iran's illegal president wants to "wipe themn off the map" for example. And to add insult to injury, I think all three the Abrahamic religions are totally mad and very evil. Religion is the scourge of humanity.

Muslims go on the rampage if a single qur'an is burned. But the Egyptian Muslim leader burns thousands of bibles: http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-TV/2012/09/14/Egyptian-Muslim-Leader-Burns-Bible-Threatens-Christians Come on you muslim commentators here, respond to this? Care to comment directly on this article?

      joe.mase.7 - 2012-09-19 09:04

@lanfear - man you have alot of hate in you. I think the reason (if they are burning bibles) is probably because of the different versions; something like 26000 versions, is probably outdated, therefore making way for the latest edition. just a thought. I may be wrong.

im wondering why is soudi arabia not protesting, ...

      joe.mase.7 - 2012-09-19 09:07

Apologies boet, I cannot find a country called soudi arabia. Are they in the ME? If you are refering to Saudi Arabia, the people will not protest, because they have the army that shut the people up immediately. It's monarchy ruled with an iron hand.

I am a Muslim and proud to be one. Clearly this pastor does not know what he is talking about. Taking a life is never right and people should respect religious beliefs of others even if they differ from your own. Muslims believe in all prophets including Jesus (AS) and if the movie criticized him then we would be just as upset. If this movie is causing so much violence then why not stop it and stop the violence? Im not looking to argue with anyone about religion or beliefs, I just feel that respect goes a long way. "unto you your religion and unto me mine. "
