Anti-austerity protest targets Clegg

2012-05-26 21:30

London - People opposed to the British government's austerity programme demonstrated outside the house of Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg in London.

Saturday's protest involves about 200 people having picnics and distributing leaflets on public land in the area, according to the spokesperson for the UK Uncut group, Murray Worthy. Clegg was not seen at his house.

Clegg is leader of the Liberal Democrats, the junior, centre-left party in a coalition government with the Conservatives.

The coalition came to power in 2010 and introduced an extensive austerity programme of state spending cuts and reforms aimed at reducing the country's deficit.

That stand by the Lib Dems led to big losses for the party during recent local elections across Britain.

"Saturday's protest involves about 200 people having picnics..." What, no destruction? And you call it a demonstration... Imagine Cosatu having a picnic...

If it was Cosatu, there would have been toy-toying, the singing of "kill the boer" and Mr. Clegg's house would have been stoned and torched :-)

Sonja from 1993 to 2009 the UK alone gave South Africa 1400 million pounds at 10 to 1 that would work out to 14 thousand million rand that’s R14 000 000 000.00. It would take some time internet digging to find out what the other euro country’s gave you and the rest of Africa but I can only imagine the amounts are staggering. When we are bankrupt will you send some of it back!!!

@ Sonja: "unbelievable....these Euro countries must go bankrupt for all we care. If working for an extra 5 years offends you so much, come STARVE in Africa for 100 years and see how suffering feels like. bstards!!!" You are clearly clueless on international politics. Firstly, austerity isnt about working an extra 5 years and if you wish the Eurozone to go bankrupt - SA will sink, as it's already effecting SA exports. Your "look East" policy on trade is also slowing down because of this. You think you have starving masses now? Wait a while....your wish may come true and then you'll see what starving is all about. Stoopid naive woman!
